Digital Storytelling to Help Hispanic Adults with Type 2 Diabetes Manage Blood Sugar: A Clinical Trial

Updated

Abstract

Among 451 Hispanic adults with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, the intervention group showed a significant reduction in hemoglobin A1c levels from 9.1% to 8.4% compared to the control group's reduction from 9.4% to 8.8% (P = .04).

  • Digital storytelling interventions may improve glycemic control in Hispanic adults with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.
  • Participants in the intervention group viewed a 12-minute video featuring stories that promote diabetes self-management behaviors.
  • The study achieved an 86% retention rate, with 390 participants completing the 3-month follow-up.
  • Both the acceptability and narrative quality of the digital storytelling intervention were rated highly by participants.
  • The intervention could be integrated into clinical practice as part of a diabetes self-management program.
