Timing of melatonin drop in dim light and its link to wake-up time and daily activity patterns in healthy adults

Updated

Abstract

74.4% of healthy adults experience dim light melatonin offset after waketime.

  • Most healthy adults wake up before the end of their biological night.
  • Later chronotype is linked to a later clock hour for dim light melatonin offset.
  • A larger positive phase relationship between dim light melatonin offset and waketime is associated with later chronotype, except for morningness-eveningness.
  • Risk for morning circadian misalignment may be present in healthy adults if only dim light melatonin onset is considered.
  • Chronotype, based on sleep timing, could more accurately predict this misalignment risk than morningness-eveningness preferences.
