Combined effects of low night light and fine air pollution particles on mice

Abstract

Short-term exposure to PM2.5 and dim light at night (dLAN) contributes to neuroinflammation and depressive-like behaviors in male mice.

  • Exposure to PM2.5 and dLAN increased the expression of neuroinflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus.
  • Altering hippocampal structure was observed following exposure to PM2.5 and dLAN.
  • Mice exposed to these pollutants exhibited behavior indicative of anxiety and depression, specifically showing signs of anhedonia.
  • Combined exposure to PM2.5 and dLAN did not lead to additive effects on neuroinflammation, suggesting a possible ceiling effect.
