Artificial light at night changes daytime coral reef fish and mid-level predator behavior, increasing nighttime predator-prey interactions

Abstract

Exposure to artificial light at night increased the time humbug damselfish spent out of shelter from 3.0% to 22.7%.

  • Damselfish foraging events on planktonic prey rose from almost none to 11.7 and 4.9 per 10 minutes shortly after sunset and at midnight, respectively.
  • The number of encounters with mesopredators increased significantly at midnight under artificial lighting conditions.
  • Mesopredator detection rates were 12.6 times higher at night due to increased activity from crepuscular and nocturnal species.
  • The probability of damselfish sheltering during encounters with mesopredators decreased by 16% at midnight when exposed to artificial light.
  • These findings suggest that even low levels of artificial light can alter both predator and prey behaviors, enhancing predation risks.
