How large weight loss from new injectable drugs relates to reproduction in healthy obese women without PCOS
Updated
Abstract
Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists may improve metabolic and reproductive symptoms in obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
- The impact of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists in non-PCOS females is not well understood.
- In animal studies, GLP-1 administration increased luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone secretion, as well as progesterone levels.
- Contradictory results were observed with GLP-1 receptor agonists, with some causing reproductive stimulation and others leading to suppression of progesterone synthesis.
- GLP-1 receptor agonists showed mixed effects on uterine function, with some indicating a reduction in collagen deposition and others resulting in epithelial damage.
- Current evidence is limited and primarily based on animal models, raising questions about the effects on human fertility.
