Treating Fatty Liver Disease with Type 2 Diabetes Using Combined and Single Hormone-Based Medicines: A Review and Analysis

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In people with type 2 diabetes and MASLD, incretin-based therapies, especially dual GIP/GLP-1 or GCGR/GLP-1 agonists, were associated with less liver fat and greater fibrosis reversal than comparators.

Evidence

This systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis pooled 13 randomized controlled trials with 1,552 participants and found higher odds of liver fibrosis reversal (OR 3.72) and lower MRI-measured liver fat content (MD -18.90) versus active therapies or placebo.

Caveat

Comparisons across dual GIP/GLP-1, GCGR/GLP-1, and single GLP-1 agonists are limited by the pooled trial mix rather than a single head-to-head program.
