Weight loss from lifestyle changes versus GLP-1 medicine in people with fatty liver disease

Updated

Abstract

Matched weight loss was achieved in both lifestyle and GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment groups.

  • Both GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment and lifestyle intervention reduced liver steatosis and disease activity similarly.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment improved glucose management and lowered fasting lipid levels more effectively than lifestyle changes.
  • De novo lipogenesis (the process of creating fat in the liver) significantly decreased with GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy.
  • After stopping GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment, certain proteins and gene expressions related to metabolism were disrupted, which may lead to weight regain.
  • No differences in the adipose tissue gene expression or stool microbiome were observed between the treatment groups immediately after the interventions.
