New Diabetes Drugs That Activate Two Hormone Receptors and Their Potential to Prevent Heart Disease

Updated

Abstract

Dual glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonists could lead to substantial improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors.

  • Agents like tirzepatide may induce marked and sustained weight loss and significantly reduce visceral fat, a key factor in cardiovascular disease.
  • Improvements in glycemic control and insulin sensitivity may help reduce glucotoxicity and lipotoxicity, which are linked to endothelial dysfunction and heart injury.
  • These treatments are associated with reductions in blood pressure and favorable changes in lipid profiles.
  • Additional effects may include suppression of systemic inflammation and improvements in endothelial function and vascular stiffness.
  • Clinical trial data suggest cardiovascular safety and improvements in risk factors comparable to established therapies, although definitive evidence of cardiovascular outcome benefits remains limited.
