Imbalance between mouth and gut microbes in a mouse model of depression

Abstract

Chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) induced significant alterations in the oral and gut microbiota of male C57BL/6J mice.

  • CSDS caused distinct depression-like behaviors, including social avoidance and anhedonia.
  • Beta-diversity analysis indicated a significant difference in oral microbiota between CSDS and control mice.
  • Control mice had higher levels of oral Streptococcus and gut bacteria such as Lachnospiraceae and Bacteroides, while CSDS mice had increased levels of oral Muribacter and gut Alloprevotella.
  • Correlation analyses revealed associations between specific microbial patterns and depression-like behaviors, with taxa in control mice negatively correlating with behavioral deficits.
  • Cross-habitat correlations between oral and gut microbial taxa were significant, suggesting interconnected ecosystems.
