Breathlessness and fatigue in Long-COVID: risk factors and lung function patterns in 765 patients across Italy

Updated

Abstract

Rates of dyspnea and fatigue among 765 patients evaluated six months post-COVID-19 were 41.3% and 41.6%, respectively.

  • About half of patients with dyspnea (51.6%) and fatigue (54.7%) had normal pulmonary function as indicated by DLCO testing.
  • Low-DLCO dyspnea was significantly linked to factors such as female sex, anxiety, longer hospitalization, and corticosteroid use.
  • Normal-DLCO dyspnea was associated with younger age and obesity.
  • Low-DLCO fatigue was related to female sex, heart failure, anxiety, and corticosteroid use.
  • Normal-DLCO fatigue showed no associations with demographics, comorbidities, or severity of COVID-19.
  • Patients with low-DLCO phenotypes exhibited significantly lower exercise capacity, measured by 6-minute walk distance.
