Symptoms, lung function, exercise ability, and inflammation after COVID-19: findings from the COVID-19 Chronic Morbidity study

Updated

Abstract

Among 253 patients with post-COVID syndrome, 84.6% reported fatigue at least at moderate severity.

  • Common symptoms included dyspnoea (70.3%), headache (69.8%), and neurocognitive impairment (66.4%).
  • Most participants had normal spirometry values, but 54.8% showed reduced inspiratory muscle strength.
  • Impaired exercise capacity was observed in 28.8% of patients during cardiopulmonary exercise testing.
  • Correlations between symptom severity and physiological measures, as well as biomarkers, were weak.
  • Patients with severe fatigue had lower serum club cell protein-16 levels compared to those without fatigue.
