Breathing exercises may improve quality of life for people with long COVID symptoms

Updated

Abstract

Combining respiratory muscle training (RMT) with aerobic exercise led to large improvements in respiratory muscle function for individuals with long-term post-COVID-19 symptoms.

  • Individuals in the RMT group experienced improvements in respiratory muscle strength and inspiratory muscle endurance.
  • Peak expiratory flow showed low-moderate improvement in the RMT group.
  • No statistically significant improvements were observed in health-related quality of life or exercise tolerance between the groups.
  • Lung function, lower and upper limb strength, and psychological status did not show greater improvements in the RMT group compared to the control group.
