Early signs of bipolar relapse shown by slower recovery in smartphone data

Updated

Abstract

Smartphone-based digital phenotyping analyzed data from 29 bipolar disorder patients over 10,587 days.

  • Increased autocorrelation and variance in activity-related measures may signal impending manic episodes.
  • Sleep parameters are associated with transitions to both manic and depressive episodes.
  • Latent factors that combine multiple predictive parameters show stronger potential than single variables.
  • No single robust predictor for mood episodes was identified, and predictive accuracy did not reach clinically useful levels.
