Fasting and re-feeding change levels of key body clock genes including Dec1 and Per1

Updated

Abstract

Withholding food for 2 days altered the expression of several clock genes in mice.

  • Dec1 mRNA levels decreased in all tissues examined during fasting.
  • Per1 mRNA levels significantly increased with fasting.
  • Per2 expression was reduced in the liver and heart starting 42-46 hours after fasting began.
  • Dec2 and Bmal1 expression profiles changed in the heart and liver, respectively, during fasting.
  • Re-feeding after a 36-hour fast partially reversed the effects of fasting on multiple clock genes.
  • Restriction feeding shifted the phase of expression profiles of all examined clock genes.
