How three back-to-back 12-hour shifts affect thinking, sleepiness, and nursing skills in day and night shift nurses

Updated

Abstract

In a sample of 94 nurses, sustained attention and predicted cognitive effectiveness decreased after three consecutive 12-hour shifts.

  • Individual differences in cognition and sleepiness varied significantly among participants.
  • No significant differences were found in nursing performance across six domains after consecutive shifts.
  • Night nurses exhibited lower communication skills compared to day nurses, though this effect was small.
  • Subjective sleepiness increased after three consecutive shifts, with particularly low cognitive effectiveness observed in fatigued night nurses.
  • Predicted cognitive effectiveness was positively correlated with communication skills, controlling for other factors.
