Effectiveness and Safety of Diabetes Drugs That Activate GLP-1 Receptors in Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract

Five randomized controlled trials involving 708 participants were analyzed to assess the effects of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) in Parkinson's disease.

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in motor examination scores (MDS-UPDRS Part III) with GLP-1RA treatment, both off and on medication.
  • Secondary outcomes, including quality of life and non-motor symptoms, also showed no significant improvements associated with GLP-1RAs.
  • GLP-1RAs were linked to a higher risk of gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and weight loss.
  • Current evidence suggests that GLP-1RAs do not provide a clear overall benefit for patients with Parkinson's disease.
