Effectiveness of Mobile Phone Smoking Quit Programs for People with Low Income: A Randomized Trial

Updated

Abstract

Among 624 smokers, 25.5% achieved biochemically verified abstinence when receiving nicotine replacement therapy with text messaging and proactive counseling.

  • Biochemically verified abstinence rates were 12.0% for nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) alone and 12.0% for NRT plus text messaging.
  • The group receiving NRT plus text messaging and proactive counseling was 2.11 times more likely to achieve biochemically verified abstinence compared to the NRT group.
  • No significant differences in abstinence rates were found between the NRT plus text messaging group and the NRT group.
  • Self-reported cessation outcomes showed similar patterns to the biochemical results.
  • Interventions consisting of text messaging alone may not effectively increase cessation rates among socioeconomically disadvantaged smokers.
