Mindfulness meditation's effects and brain changes in adults with internet gaming disorder

Updated

Abstract

Mindfulness meditation (MM) significantly reduced internet gaming disorder (IGD) severity from a mean score of 7.0 to 3.6.

  • Both MM and progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) led to a decrease in IGD severity, but MM was more effective.
  • The MM group experienced a greater reduction in IGD severity compared to the PMR group, with a score change of -3.6 versus -1.1.
  • MM was linked to decreased brain activation in specific regions including the bilateral lentiform nuclei, insula, and medial frontal gyrus.
  • After MM, participants showed increased functional connectivity between the medial frontal gyrus and lentiform nuclei.
  • A significant decrease in gaming cravings was observed in the MM group, with scores dropping from 58.8 to 33.6.
