Abstract

Seventeen studies involving 2136 participants investigated the effects of ADHD medications in patients with bipolar disorder.

  • Methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts may help reduce ADHD symptoms in bipolar disorder patients.
  • Limited evidence suggests modafinil could have positive effects on certain cognitive functions.
  • No increased risk of (hypo)mania was observed when these medications were used with mood stabilizers.
  • Five studies showed low risk of bias, while eleven had moderate risk, and one had serious risk.
