Amphetamines used to treat ADHD in adults

Updated

Abstract

Amphetamines reduced the severity of ADHD symptoms in adults, with a standardized mean difference (SMD) of -0.90 as rated by clinicians.

  • Low- to very low-quality evidence suggests that amphetamines may reduce ADHD symptoms based on clinician assessments.
  • Amphetamines did not improve retention in treatment, with a risk ratio (RR) of 1.06.
  • Increased withdrawal due to adverse events was associated with amphetamines, with a risk ratio of RR 2.69.
  • Lisdexamfetamine and mixed amphetamine salts were both effective in reducing ADHD symptom severity, while dexamphetamine showed no significant effect.
  • Different doses of amphetamines did not correlate with variations in efficacy.
  • No differences in efficacy were found between immediate- and sustained-release formulations.
