Patterns of electronic device use linked to sleep problems in teenagers

Updated

Abstract

Four distinct electronic device usage patterns were identified among 19,229 adolescents.

  • Patterns included 'minor exposure-learning,' 'weekends dominance-game playing,' 'weekends and pre-sleep dominance-learning,' and 'excessive exposure-game playing.'
  • Adolescents in the 'weekends and pre-sleep dominance-learning' and 'excessive exposure-game playing' patterns showed a higher likelihood of insufficient sleep during both weekdays and weekends.
  • The 'weekends dominance-game playing' pattern was associated with insufficient sleep only on weekends.
  • Patterns 2-4 correlated with delayed bedtimes, insomnia symptoms, and experiences of sleep paralysis or nightmares.
  • Minimal screen exposure linked to learning was associated with fewer sleep disturbances.
