New drug and brain stimulation treatments for suicidal thoughts and actions

Abstract

Thirty-four studies examined various pharmacological and neuromodulation interventions for suicidal ideation or attempts.

  • Controlled trials indicated that suicidal ideation often improved within days to weeks.
  • Some trials suggested that reductions in suicidal ideation may occur independently of changes in depression scores, although this evidence is inconsistent.
  • Positive results were noted for NMDA-related drugs, opioid-system modulation, ayahuasca, and adjunctive pimavanserin.
  • Associations were found between lower suicidality and treatments such as folic acid and testosterone initiation, while non-medical cannabis use correlated with worse suicidal ideation outcomes.
  • Neuromodulation methods like repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and vagus nerve stimulation showed promise for reducing suicidal ideation.
