Emodin helps prevent obesity caused by a high-fat diet by activating energy-regulating pathways in white fat tissue

Updated

Abstract

Emodin (80 mg/kg/day) significantly reduced body weight gain and plasma lipid levels in high-fat diet-fed rats.

  • Emodin caused a dose-dependent decrease in triglyceride accumulation in fat cells.
  • Higher doses of emodin led to reduced sizes of epididymal white adipose tissue in rats on a high-fat diet.
  • Emodin and pioglitazone both increased the activity of AMP-activated protein kinase and affected related metabolic pathways.
  • Gene expression changes included upregulation of carnitine palmitoyl transferase 1 and downregulation of enzymes associated with fat synthesis.
