Starting empagliflozin and dulaglutide treatment for type 2 diabetes patients in New Zealand under special approval

Updated

Abstract

Of 57,743 patients with Type 2 diabetes, 46.0% were prescribed funded SGLT2i/GLP1RA therapy.

  • Māori patients had the highest initiation rate of SGLT2i/GLP1RA therapy at 50.8%, followed by Pacific patients at 48.8%.
  • Initiation rates for other ethnic groups ranged from 36.2% to 40.7%.
  • There was no significant difference in therapy initiation between patients with and without cardiovascular or renal disease (47.1% vs. 48.9%).
  • Higher prescribing rates were observed in practices with more doctors per patient and lower fees.
  • Māori health providers and clinics without after-hours access were also associated with increased prescribing.
