How caffeine pills and chewing gum affect strength and power in trained men

Abstract

Caffeine supplementation in capsule and gum forms enhanced lower-body strength and power, with over 50% of participants exceeding performance thresholds.

  • In knee extensors, caffeine capsules increased average peak torque and power by +11.2% and +14.1%, and caffeinated gum increased these by +7.3% and +11.4% compared to placebo.
  • Maximum voluntary isometric contraction at 45° was higher with caffeine capsules (+10.1%) compared to placebo.
  • Caffeinated gum improved time to peak torque at 60° by +18.2% compared to placebo.
  • Caffeine capsules increased the average rate of force development at 60° by +24.1%, while caffeinated gum showed a +20.6% increase compared to placebo.
  • Vertical jump height was significantly higher with both caffeine forms, increasing by +5.5% for capsules and +6% for gum compared to placebo.
