Body Clock Reduces Nighttime Blood Vessel Function in People with Untreated Sleep Apnea

Updated

Abstract

Essence

In untreated obstructive sleep apnea, the endogenous circadian system appears to weaken vascular endothelial function during the biological night.

Evidence

This 5-day circadian physiology study measured brachial artery flow-mediated dilation repeatedly in 12 adults with untreated moderate to severe OSA and found a circadian trough near 3:00 am.

Caveat

The study was small and used endothelial function as a surrogate marker, so it does not directly show nighttime cardiovascular events.
