Melatonin's influence on natural daily body clocks in blind people

Updated

Abstract

In a crossover study of seven totally blind subjects, six were able to synchronize their free-running circadian rhythms to a normal 24-hour cycle with melatonin treatment.

  • Subjects exhibited free-running circadian rhythms averaging 24.5 hours before treatment.
  • Placebo administration did not alter the circadian rhythms of the subjects.
  • During melatonin treatment, six out of seven subjects had their rhythms entrained to a 24.0-hour cycle.
  • After entrainment, subjects experienced a reduction in time awake after falling asleep.
  • Sleep efficiency improved following melatonin treatment.
  • In a follow-up, a reduced melatonin dose of 0.5 mg per day maintained the entrained circadian rhythm.
