Lack of natural light disrupts testosterone-producing cell development and male reproductive growth in rats

Abstract

Essence

Continuous darkness disrupted circadian-endocrine coordination and delayed male reproductive maturation in rats.

Evidence

An animal developmental study reared male rats without light from postnatal day 21 and measured activity, hormones, Leydig-cell gene expression, mitochondrial markers, and sperm endpoints at days 35, 42, and 90.

Caveat

The findings come from a rat continuous-darkness model, so they do not show the same fertility effects in humans or in less extreme light-exposure conditions.
