Making Psilocybin Using Enzymes

Four enzymes responsible for psilocybin biosynthesis were characterized.

  • PsiD is identified as a new type of enzyme that converts l-tryptophan into another compound.
  • PsiK facilitates the transfer of a phosphate group during the biosynthesis process.
  • PsiM is responsible for adding methyl groups as the final step in creating psilocybin.
  • PsiH acts as a monooxygenase, playing a role in the biosynthetic pathway.
  • An enzymatic synthesis of psilocybin was achieved from 4-hydroxy-l-tryptophan using PsiD, PsiK, and PsiM.
