Ergonomic methods to prevent upper limb and neck muscle and joint problems in office workers

Updated

Abstract

In a review of 15 randomized controlled trials involving 2165 workers, inconsistent evidence was found regarding ergonomic interventions for preventing upper limb and neck musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).

  • Moderate-quality evidence suggests that using an arm support with an alternative computer mouse may reduce the incidence of neck or shoulder MSDs.
  • No considerable reduction in the incidence of right upper limb MSDs was observed when comparing an alternative computer mouse to a conventional mouse.
  • Workstation adjustments and sit-stand desks showed no effect on upper limb pain or discomfort compared to no intervention.
  • Very low-quality evidence indicates that supplementary breaks may reduce discomfort in the neck and right shoulder among data entry workers.
  • Low to very low-quality evidence suggests that training interventions may not prevent work-related upper limb or neck MSDs.
