Study Finds Serious Thinking Problems in Some People After COVID-19

Updated

Abstract

Approximately 7% of adults develop Post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), which includes distinct cognitive profiles.

  • Cognitive impairment is common in PCS, with two identified subgroups based on cognitive performance.
  • 7.5% of PCS patients exhibit severe objective cognitive impairments, while 92.5% have cognitive performance similar to convalescents, healthy controls, and post-viral syndrome patients.
  • The PCS subgroup with severe impairments shows significant difficulties in attention, memory, and executive functions.
  • Objective cognitive impairments in PCS were not predicted by fatigue severity or affective states such as depression or anxiety.
  • Lifetime psychiatric disorders and cognitive fatigue were found to be significantly more prevalent in the PCS patient group.
