Exercise therapy for long-term fatigue syndrome

Updated

Abstract

Data from 1518 participants indicate that exercise therapy may reduce fatigue in individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome.

  • Seven studies showed a consistent reduction in fatigue following exercise therapy compared to passive controls.
  • Exercise therapy demonstrated positive effects on sleep, physical functioning, and self-perceived overall health.
  • No significant differences in fatigue were found when comparing exercise therapy to cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • Serious adverse reactions were rare across all groups, but limited data hindered definitive conclusions.
  • Evidence suggested exercise may be more effective than pacing and comparable to cognitive behavioral therapy.
