Family risk for mental illness in people treated for cannabis-related psychosis compared to schizophrenia

Updated

Abstract

Among individuals with a mother diagnosed with schizophrenia, the risk of developing cannabis-induced psychosis is 2.5-fold higher.

  • The rate ratios for developing cannabis-induced psychosis and schizophrenia spectrum disorder are similar when considering familial predisposition to psychiatric disorders.
  • Children with a mother suffering from schizophrenia face a 5-fold increased risk of developing schizophrenia.
  • The onset timing of schizophrenia spectrum disorders following cannabis-induced psychosis does not correlate with family history of psychiatric conditions.
  • Familial predisposition to both general psychiatric disorders and specific psychotic disorders appears to equally influence the likelihood of subsequent treatment for schizophrenia and cannabis-induced psychoses.
  • Cannabis-induced psychosis may indicate an early stage of schizophrenia rather than being a separate clinical condition.
