Body Muscle Index in Male and Female College Athletes Across Different Sports

Abstract

A total of 1,961 collegiate athletes were evaluated for fat-free mass index (FFMI) across various sports.

  • Men exhibited a higher FFMI (21.5 ± 1.9 kg·m -2) compared to women (17.9 ± 1.8 kg·m -2; p < 0.001).
  • In women, basketball players had the highest FFMI at 18.9 kg·m -2, while rowers had the lowest at 16.9 kg·m -2.
  • Among men, throwers recorded the highest FFMI at 25.7 kg·m -2, whereas volleyball players had the lowest at 19.9 kg·m -2.
  • Variations in FFMI across different sports may relate to the dietary habits and physiological demands specific to each sport.
