The FATP1-DGAT2 complex helps fat droplets grow where they form in cells

Updated

Abstract

FATP1 and DGAT2 are components of a triglyceride synthesis complex that may facilitate lipid droplet expansion.

  • The interaction between FATP1 and DGAT2 is crucial for lipid droplet expansion in Caenorhabditis elegans.
  • A loss of function in either FATP1 or DGAT2 resulted in blocked lipid droplet expansion.
  • FATP1 preferentially associates with DGAT2, and both proteins work together to promote lipid droplet expansion in mammalian cells.
  • Live imaging shows that FATP1 and DGAT2 are located in the endoplasmic reticulum and lipid droplets, respectively.
  • Electron microscopy revealed FATP1 and DGAT2 close to the lipid droplet surface.
  • DGAT2 that remains in the endoplasmic reticulum does not support lipid droplet expansion.
