Fermented cereal-based probiotic mixes may support healthy aging in a worm model

Updated

Abstract

Dramatic lifespan extension of up to 53.1% was observed in Caenorhabditis elegans using specific gerobiotic combinations.

  • Two synergistic gerobiotic combinations were identified: cocktail 55 and cocktail 112.
  • Cocktail 55, consisting of PS70, PS77, and PS60, achieved a lifespan extension of 46.2%.
  • Cocktail 112, which includes PS77, PS10, and PS91, resulted in a lifespan extension of 53.1%.
  • The life-promoting effect of cocktail 55 is associated with the p38 MAPK-SKN-1 pathway.
  • Cocktail 112 appears to act on multiple signaling pathways, including IIS, β-catenin, and TGF-β pathways.
  • Feeding these gerobiotic cocktails improved various healthspan markers that typically decline with aging.
