How well the Fitbit Charge 3 tracks sleep compared to standard sleep tests in teenage boys and girls

Abstract

Fitbit Charge 3™ systematically underestimated total sleep time by about 11 minutes compared to gold-standard polysomnography.

  • The device underestimated sleep efficiency by 2.5% and overestimated wake after sleep onset by 9 minutes.
  • Significant underestimation of light and deep sleep duration was observed, particularly in participants with longer PSG durations.
  • Epoch-by-epoch analysis revealed sleep-stage sensitivity of 68% for wake, 78% for light sleep, 59% for deep sleep, and 69% for REM sleep.
  • Body mass index was positively associated with discrepancies in wake after sleep onset.
  • Changes in heart rate between consecutive PSG epochs significantly influenced the device's sleep stage classifications.
