Fluid intake and sweating in professional and college football players with different access to drinks during practice

Abstract

Mean sweat rates were similar at 2.1 L/h for NFL players and 1.8 L/h for collegiate players.

  • No significant difference was found in the percentage of weight loss between NFL and collegiate players.
  • Collegiate players had a greater daily sweat loss of 8.0 L compared to 6.4 L for NFL players.
  • Fluid consumption was higher in collegiate players at 5.0 L versus 4.0 L for NFL players.
  • A strong correlation (r = 0.79) was observed between sweat loss and fluid consumption.
  • Linemen had a higher mean sweat rate of 2.3 L/h compared to backs at 1.6 L/h.
