Folic acid and creatine help make human skin firmer

Updated

Abstract

Topical application of a formulation containing folic acid and creatine significantly improved the firmness of mature skin.

  • Skin aging is associated with a decrease in firmness due to changes in the collagen network, particularly from sun exposure.
  • In vivo imaging revealed structural changes in the collagen network of young and aged sun-exposed facial skin.
  • The treatment with folic acid and creatine increased collagen gene expression and procollagen levels in cultured fibroblast-populated collagen gels.
  • Improvements in collagen fiber density were observed, suggesting enhanced collagen metabolism as a mechanism for the observed effects.
