Food insecurity and problematic Internet use in rural Chinese teens: how school, family, friends, and self-esteem relate

Updated

Abstract

Among 1654 rural Chinese adolescents, food insecurity (FI) was positively associated with problematic Internet use (PIU).

  • Food insecurity is linked to higher levels of problematic Internet use among adolescents.
  • Social support from school, family, and peers is negatively associated with problematic Internet use.
  • Higher school support and family support intensified the relationship between food insecurity and problematic Internet use.
  • Adolescents with increased social support may experience lower self-esteem, which is associated with higher problematic Internet use.
  • The study highlights the complex roles of social support and self-esteem in the relationship between food insecurity and problematic Internet use.
