FTO reduces a chemical tag on BECN1 RNA, leading to fat buildup in the liver by blocking cell cleanup

Updated

Abstract

Essence

FTO appears to promote hepatic lipid accumulation by destabilizing BECN1 mRNA and impairing .

Evidence

This preclinical study combined free fatty acid-treated HepG2 cells, mechanistic m6A/RNA assays, rescue experiments, and high-fat diet-fed mice with hepatic FTO knockdown.

Caveat

The evidence comes from cell and mouse steatosis models, so therapeutic relevance for human hyperlipidemia or metabolic disease is not established.
