Gene

FTO gene variant linked to long-term diabetes complications in Czech people

Updated

Abstract

The frequency of the GG genotype for the FTO gene was 25.4% in T2DM patients compared to 16.7% in healthy controls.

  • The FTO gene variant rs17817449 is linked to susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Czech-Slavonic population.
  • No significant difference in FTO genotype frequency was found between type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients and controls.
  • T1DM patients with the GG genotype have an increased risk of developing diabetic nephropathy compared to TT homozygotes.
  • T2DM patients with the GG genotype or G carriers also show a higher risk of diabetic nephropathy compared to TT homozygotes.
  • The FTO genotype is linked to the development of diabetic neuropathy in T2DM patients but not in T1DM patients.
  • No association was found between the FTO genotype and the development of diabetic retinopathy.
