Abstract

About 20.3% of non-institutionalized elderly individuals meet the criteria for primary insomnia.

  • Approximately 34.2% of the elderly reported having sleep problems.
  • Anxiety disorders, low life satisfaction, and consumption of psychopharmaceuticals are associated with primary insomnia.
  • Diabetes was reported more frequently among elderly individuals with insomnia (24.4% vs. 14.7%).
  • No significant association was found between insomnia and the ability to perform basic or instrumental activities.
