Approximately 20.3% of elderly individuals over 65 meet criteria for primary insomnia.

  • 34.2% of participants reported chronic sleeping difficulties.
  • 62.1% experienced a sensation of insufficient night-time sleep, while 52.2% reported daytime tiredness or sleepiness.
  • Insomnia rates were significantly higher in females and those with irregular sleep hours or dissatisfaction with their bedroom environment.
  • 26.9% of subjects regularly consumed psychopharmaceuticals.
  • Individuals with insomnia averaged 2.4 health problems compared to 1.7 in non-insomniacs.
  • Female gender and the presence of two or more health issues are associated with a higher likelihood of primary insomnia.
