A Game-Based Mobile App to Encourage Exercise and Reduce Sitting Time in Autistic Adults: Plan for a Remote Pilot Study

Updated

Abstract

As of July 2025, 69 participants have been enrolled in the ongoing field deployment of the PuzzleWalk app.

  • Community-based design workshops indicated that stakeholders view the gamified PuzzleWalk app as a viable tool to motivate physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior in autistic adults.
  • Phase I focused on gathering input from key autism stakeholders, including autistic adults and caregivers, to refine the app's features.
  • An 8-week field deployment is underway to evaluate the app's real-world usability and engagement.
  • Outcome measures will assess changes in physical activity levels and sedentary time across four specific time points during the intervention.
