Health risks linked to using gas for cooking and heating in rich, middle-income, and poor countries: a combined review and analysis

Updated

Abstract

116 studies were included in the meta-analysis, revealing significant health benefits of using gas over polluting fuels.

  • Gas use significantly lowered the risk of pneumonia (OR 0·54) and wheeze (OR 0·42) compared to polluting fuels.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease risk was reduced by using gas instead of polluting fuels (OR 0·37).
  • Significant reductions in cough (OR 0·44) and breathlessness (OR 0·40) were also observed with gas use.
  • Switching to gas was associated with a lower risk of preterm birth (OR 0·66) and low birth weight (OR 0·70) compared to polluting fuels.
  • Compared to electricity, gas was associated with a higher risk of pneumonia (OR 1·26) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR 1·15).
