How the amount of clear fluids affects stomach emptying time in children

Updated

Abstract

The median gastric emptying time was 40.0 minutes for children ingesting 5 ml/kg of clear fluids.

  • Both groups showed a significant increase in gastric volume after fluid ingestion, which returned to baseline levels within 1 hour.
  • The comparison of gastric emptying times between groups revealed no significant difference.
  • Ingestion of 3 ml/kg and 5 ml/kg clear fluids resulted in comparable gastric emptying half-times.
  • Preoperative fasting time may be safely reduced to 1 hour for healthy children allowed to drink up to 5 ml/kg clear fluids.
