Gegen Qinlian decoction may help heal the gut lining in ulcerative colitis mice by changing gut bacteria and tryptophan metabolism through the AhR/IL-22 pathway

Updated

Abstract

Gegen Qinlian decoction (GQD) significantly alleviated pathological symptoms in acute ulcerative colitis mice.

  • GQD treatment led to improvements in body weight, disease activity index (DAI), organ index, colon length, and colon pathology.
  • The administration of GQD reduced FITC-dextran diffusion in the intestinal tract and decreased its serum levels.
  • GQD decreased bacterial infiltration in mesenteric lymph nodes and colon tissues.
  • Treatment with GQD increased the number of colonic goblet cells and repaired the structure of epithelial tight junctions.
  • GQD elevated the proportion of IL-22-positive immune cells in the lamina propria and increased IL-22 levels in colon homogenates.
  • GQD restored indole derivatives from tryptophan metabolism and enhanced the diversity and abundance of gut microbiota.
