Gene Roles in How Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron Uses Mucin for Survival

Updated

Abstract

A total of 1,256 genes exhibited condition-dependent fitness divergence in the mucin-utilization network of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron.

  • Mucin utilization is organized in a layered manner, reflecting different contributions to growth.
  • Enrichment for strains with repressed capsular polysaccharide loci indicates a mucin-specific fitness signature.
  • Specific capsules were found to impede growth on mucin, suggesting a trade-off related to surface accessibility.
  • Most genes involved in carbohydrate binding and glycan breakdown exhibited little impact on fitness, indicating redundancy in these functions.
  • Significant constraints were observed in downstream sugar catabolism, particularly with the galactose-utilization gene BT_0623.
  • Comparative analysis with murine colon data showed alignment with in vitro findings, while also revealing environment-specific differences.
