Genetic evidence that severe COVID-19 may speed up brain shrinkage over time

Updated

Abstract

COVID-19 hospitalization and severity were genetically associated with atrophied total brain volume in a study involving 5,779,391 participants.

  • Genetic associations were found linking COVID-19 hospitalization and severity to changes in brain structure over time.
  • Individuals experiencing severe COVID-19 may face an increased risk of accelerated brain aging.
  • The caudate region of the brain was affected by all measured COVID-19 phenotypes.
  • Seven genetic variants were identified as common between advanced COVID-19 and brain aging.
  • One specific genetic variant, rs117169628, was linked to both advanced COVID-19 and global brain aging, reducing expression of the gene CDH15.
  • Potential mediators identified include six metabolites, one protein, and one immune trait.
